The Girl Scouts Heart of the South council has selected Karen Bowyer, president of Dyersburg State Community College, to represent the local organization as honorary chairman for its 100th anniversary and the “Year of the Girl” campaign.
“The Girl Scouts offer so many valuable skills through their programs,” Ms. Bowyer said. “Developing leadership skills, building self-esteem, giving girls opportunities. These are all things that are so important, especially in a difficult world.”
Ms. Bowyer has been working with Girl Scouts all her life, from chaperoning summer camps, to hosting day camps on the Dyersburg State campus, to participating on the community advisory committee in Jackson for the local Girl Scout council. She said she expects to attend some of the major 100th anniversary events.
The local council and national organization are celebrating the 100th anniversary of Girl Scouts of the USA throughout 2012.
