SIU-E hoops earn sportsmanship award Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville is the recipient of the 2011-12 Team Sportsmanship Award for both men’s and women’s basketball in the Ohio Valley Conference. Voted on by the student-athletes and coaches of the respective sports, the team awards are given to the squads deemed to have best exhibited the standards of sportsmanship and ethical behavior as outlined by the OVC and NCAA. Included in the areas for evaluation are the conduct of student-athletes, coaches, staff and administrators and fans. The 2011-12 school year marks the seventh year the team sportsmanship honors have been awarded. This marks the first award for the either SIU-E basketball program and the second year in a row (and third overall) that a school has swept the awards. The SIUE men finished their first season of league competition with a 6-10 record in OVC play. In their first full season of OVC play, the SIU-E women finished third in the standings with a 12-4 overall record. The team hosted a game in the Women’s Basketball Invitational (WBI) following the season and capped the year with 18 total victories. Published in The WCP 4.5.12 |
