Govs get offensive to sweep Skyhawks

Austin Peay had enough offense to sweep UT Martin.
The Governors scored 26 runs on 33 hits to take all three games in this past weekend’s OVC series against the Skyhawks at Raymond C. Hand Park in Clarksville.
APSU won 10-2 in the opening game on Friday, 4-0 in Saturday’s game and then 12-8 on Sunday.
The Govs stayed perfect in the league at 6-0, improving to 18-10 overall. UTM, meanwhile, is now 8-19 and 2-4.
UT Martin was to travel to Vanderbilt today.

The Skyhawks scored twice in the first inning and held a 2-0 lead until the bottom of the fourth as the Govs put up four runs.
APSU then added another run in the fifth frame and broke out with five more runs in the eighth.
The Governor pitchers combined on a four-hitter, Ryan Quick pitching 7 1/3 solid innings for the win. Quick allowed all four hits while striking out nine.
Jordan Owen and Phil Sorensen scored UTM’s two runs.
P.J. Torres and Michael Blanchard each had a pair of hits for the Govs, while Rolando Gautier drove in four runs.
Alex Mills (2-1) suffered the pitching loss.

The Governors broke a scoreless tie with a run in the fifth inning and then added another run in the sixth and two in the seventh.
Owen had two of UT Martin’s seven hits, while starting pitcher Willie Frederick (1-4) gave up three runs on five hits while striking out three in a losing bid.
Reed Harper and Tyler Childress each had two hits and scored a run for Austin Peay.
Austin Peay 12, UTM 8
Held hitless in the first two games, Chase Okey broke out in his first at-bat of the third game with a home run.
UTM scored another run in the first and led 8-6 going into the bottom of the fifth inning. The Governors took over there, however, with five runs for an 11-8 advantage
Austin Peay scored one more run in the eighth.
Peay took a 3-2 lead in the second inning with back-to-back home runs from Torres and Childress, but then UTM plated four runs in the top of the third.
Okey finished with a pair of hits, while Matt Young was 3-for-5 for the Skyhawks.
Torres was 3-for-5 for the Govs, while Childress, Blanchard, Jon Clinard and Cody Hudson all had two hits.
Chuck Eldin, the third of five APSU pitchers, picked up the win, while Alex Boshers (1-3) suffered the loss in relief for UTM. Published in The WCP 4.3.12
