’Dogs, Greenfield work up wins; Lion teams can’t keep up

Thomas Fowler had just enough left in him to earn a complete game victory as Gleason won 9-5 over Dresden in District 13A baseball action Monday afternoon.
Other local baseball play on Monday had Greenfield posting a 4-2 win over South Fulton. In softball, Dresden traveled to South Fulton and suffered a 9-0 loss in District 14A.
Today, South Fulton hosts Greenfield and Gleason travels to Dresden in baseball action, while Dresden will also host Gleason in softball play.
BASEBALL
Gleason 9, Dresden 5
The visiting Lions did not make things easy for Fowler and the Bulldogs. After being down 6-1 going into the top of the fifth inning, Dresden scored four runs on four hits, two Gleason miscues and one wild pitch to make it a 6-5 game.
Dresden’s Joey Caldwell and Logan Matlock got back-to-back base hits to lead off the fifth and with one out, Gatlin Hatchel hit a double that scored Caldwell and Matlock. Hatchel went to third on the throw to the infield and later scored on Chase Ezell’s fielding error on Mac Doran’s drive to center field. Doran ended up at third after Fowler was called for a balk and then scored the fourth run of the inning on a wild pitch.
Fowler settled down after that and got two strike outs in the sixth and got Chaz Coleman to lift a fly ball to Ezell to end the game.
The Bulldogs scored four runs themselves to take the 6-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth on three hits, three walks and one batter hit by a pitch.
Hatchel, who started for the Lions, failed to record an out in the fourth inning after allowing seven-of-eight batters to reach base safely. Austin Perry, Gabe Lowrance and Cole Verdell each got base hits off of Hatchel and then Will Clark reached on a walk. Perry scored the first run of the inning on an error by Chaz Coleman.
Ezell drew a bases-loaded walk to pick up an RBI followed by Fowler getting hit by a pitch the forced in another run. Hatchel walked Verdell to force in another run and then was replaced on the mound by Logan Thomas, who got the next two batters to hit a pop out and ground out.
Gleason scored a run in the bottom of the fifth to make it a 7-5 game when Lowrance scored from third on a double-play ball hit by Clark.
The Bulldogs added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth when Fowler scored after Austin Sullivan hit into a fielder’s choice and Verdell crossed home plate on an error by Thomas.
The Bulldogs improved to 6-2 overall and 4-1 in the district. The Lions fall to 4-6 for the season and 2-3 in the district. Both teams will meet again this afternoon at 5 in Dresden for the final time this season.
Greenfield 4, SF 2
The Yellowjackets broke a scoreless tie with three runs in the third inning and added another run in the fifth.
South Fulton’s two runs came in the sixth frame.
Zac Grooms led the ’Jackets with three hits, including a triple, and two runs. Adam Bethel was 2-for-3 with two RBIs for Greenfield.
Heath Crouse tossed a complete game one-hitter, striking out eight and walking one for the pitching win.
Greenfield improved to 9-1, while SF is now 1-9.
SOFTBALL
SF 9, Dresden 2
South Fulton scored three runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings and limited the Lady Lions to just two hits in the district meeting.
Carrie Hatchel tripled and doubled for both Dresden hits.
Haley McKinney was perfect through 41⁄3 innings and finished with 10 strikeouts for the pitching win, while Abigail Lockhart struck out six and allowed 10 hits. Published in The WCP 4.3.12
