A local Democrat may throw his hat into the ring for the 24th Senatorial District seat slated for the August ballot.
Brad Thompson of Obion County has picked up a qualifying petition for the seat, making him the only Democratic candidate in northwest Tennessee thus far showing interest in the seat.
Dresden Democrat Roy Herron currently holds the post. Earlier this year, Herron announced plans to not seek re-election to the seat he has held for 16 years.
Since his announcement, Obion County Commissioner Danny Jowers announced he would seek the seat on the Republican ticket. A second Republican, John Stevens, an attorney from Huntington, also announced his intent to seek the Senate seat.
Thompson has served as an aide to retired U.S. Rep. John Tanner for nearly 15 years.
He was recently selected as City of Martin Community Development director.
Candidates have until Thursday to file their qualifying papers to seek office in August.
Even-numbered Weakley County School Board seats are also listed on the August ballot.
