Milan arsenal laying off 500 Posted: Monday, April 2, 2012 7:00 pm MILAN (AP) – Officials in West Tennessee say the loss of 500 jobs at the Milan Arsenal will mean an estimated $30 million loss to the local economy. American Ordnance has told employees it will lay off 400 full-time workers and 100 part-time employees by year’s end. The Jackson Sun (http://bit.ly/GQvkpf) quoted Brad Hurley, president of the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce, who said the impact on Carroll and Gibson counties includes everything from housing to charitable giving. American Ordnance announced it is moving production of military ordnance to its plant in Burlington, Iowa. The work includes the manufacture of rifle-fired grenades, mortars and other military ordnance. The layoffs in Milan begin at the end of March with more to follow in April and June.
