Freshman pitcher Casey Vincent threw a one-hitter and led UT Martin softball team to a 3-1 victory over visiting Belmont Tuesday afternoon at Bettye Giles Field.
“I didn’t feel good out there today, but my defense was behind me,” Vincent said.
With the victory, Vincent improves to 5-3 in the circle and the Skyhawks improve to 20-12 on the year.
Belmont, which will compete in the Ohio Valley Conference next season, fell to 5-21.
“Casey pitched a great game for us today,” UT Martin head coach Donley Canary said.
Belmont scored one run in the top of the fifth inning when Becca Gift crossed the plate on Ashley Hammer’s double to left center field.
UT Martin answered Belmont with a run of its own in the bottom of the fifth inning when Leah Taylor’s ground ball scored Kristen Lackey from third base.
The Skyhawks took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Becca Williams and Stephanie Nidiffer drove in the runs.
The Skyhawks managed just five hits in the game. “We didn’t stay back to hit the ball,” Canary said.
Kayla Wade, Jenny Bain, Erica Duke, Sam McClure and Nidiffer accounted for the five hits in the game.
The Skyhawks will play at Southeast Missouri State today and then host Tennessee State for a three-game series Saturday and Sunday. Published in The WCP 3.29.12
