| AURORA, Ky. (AP) — Gov. Steve Beshear says the Federal Highway Administration has approved $9 million in emergency relief funding to repair a bridge in western Kentucky at the western entrance of Land Between the Lakes. A 322-foot section of the 80-year-old bridge was torn off the night of Jan. 26 when a cargo ship struck it. A contractor has begun engineering and design work on the project to repair it. Beshear’s office says Hall Contracting of Kentucky Inc. has agreed to restore traffic from U.S. 68/Kentucky 80 to the bridge by Memorial Day weekend, as summer tourism season gets under way. About 2,600 vehicles a day used the bridge. Closure of it added a 42-mile detour to the 22-mile trip from Aurora to Cadiz. Published in The Messenger 3.29.12 | | | |
