Concrete canoe races in UC Friday
The University of Tennes-see at Martin is hosting the American Society of Civil Engineers Deep South Conference for the first time today through Saturday — with one day of events to be staged at a Union City park.
The school will welcome students from more than 14 southern universities for the conference, which will feature highly-anticipated concrete canoe races and steel bridge contests.
Concrete canoe races will be held Friday at the new Veterans Park off Everett Boulevard in Union City, with displays and aesthetic judging to be held around 9 a.m.
A swamp test will begin around 10:30 a.m. and concrete canoe slalom races will take place from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Concrete canoe sprint races will follow from 1-3 p.m. and concrete canoe oral presentations will take place from 3-5.
Saturday, in the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center on the UT Martin campus, bridges will be assembled for display from 8-9 a.m. Surveying competitions will be held in the quad on the UT Martin campus starting at 9 and bridge timed assembly and loading will last all day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Elam Center.
The day will conclude with awards presentations at 5 p.m. in the Elam Center. Published in The Messenger 3.29.12
