| Depth allowed the Union City to get a win and the Lady Tornadoes to get in some quality practice. UC swept its tennis matches at Halls on Monday afternoon, overcoming the absence of its No. 4 boys’ singles player for a 4-3 win and cruising to a 7-0 girls’ verdict. Depth was no issue at the fairground courts in Union City, where Obion Central played host to five Gibson County players, winning all six matches. In girls’ action, wins at the first and fifth singles seeds and the two doubles spots locked up the team win and gave UC head coach Elizabeth Miller the room to have her three middle seeds put recent practice sessions to use in actual matches. “Before Tara (Elam), Jenna (Miller) and Anna (Moore) went on, I told them there won’t be many times that you get to go out and play knowing that we’ve already won the match, so try some of the aggressive stuff we’ve been working on, like serving and volleying and playing more at the net,” Miller said. “All of my girls are such good net players, so I want them to get up there every chance they get to put it away.” All three won to complete the team shutout. Junior Alex Pegram was not in the lineup for the Twister boys, but the shifts in the lineup did stop Union City from posting the team win. UC won the middle spots in singles play and the No. 2 seed in doubles to take the win. Peyton Cox, Devin King and Ellis Critchlow gave Union City the upper hand in singles action, and then John Harpole filled in for Pegram in teaming with King for an 8-5 doubles decision. Few in numbers coming into the match, GC had even fewer before it was over as top seed Jessany Moore had to retire from her match with Marissa Howard due to a knee injury. Howard was winning 4-1 win the match was called. OC gave up just five games in five girls’ matches, and Dallas Mathis held off Ziggy Kinton for an 8-6 win in the lone boys’ match. ——— UNION CITY AT HALLS GIRLS Singles Maddie King (UC) d.
