Frosh’s homer ends UTM’s skid Posted: Wednesday, March 28, 2012 12:00 pm Freshman Lauren Smith hit her fourth home run of the season, a solo shot to right center field, in the first inning to start the Skyhawks on a 4-2 win over Murray State in OVC softball action Sunday at Murray. With the victory, which followed 4-1 and 3-2 losses on Saturday, UT Martin is 19-12 overall and 9-2 in the Ohio Valley Conference. Murray State is 11-6 and 9-3 in the league. Murray State claimed a 2-1 lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning, but UT Martin answered with three runs in the top of the fourth inning. Senior Erica Duke drove in two runs with a single as the Skyhawks took advantage of two hits and a Murray State error. Senior Chelsea Jones (13-4) pitched a three-hit, complete game. She gave up five walks and struck out two. Saturday’s Games Murray St. 4, UTM 1 UT Martin had plenty of opportunities to score, but only capitalized in the first inning, scoring an unearned run. Junior Leah Taylor had two hits and a stolen base in the game, while senior Ericka Duke also had two hits in the game. Murray State scored one run in the fourth inning and three more runs in the fifth inning. Jones was tagged with the pitching loss.
