Meyer’s quick goal
spurs Westview

Aston Meyer had two goals in leading Westview to a 4-1 win over Obion Central in boys’ prep soccer action Tuesday afternoon at Troy.
Meyer set the tempo by giving the Chargers a 1-0 lead just 45 seconds into the match.
Cal Bradshaw and Adam Reinhard each scored a goal, Reinhard’s coming on a penalty kick to complete the Chargers’ scoring. Reinhard assisted on the other three goals.
Scout Edwards had six saves in goal, while Abraham Haddad, Miles Gearin, Wesley Grimes and Tanner Bell all played well defensively for the Chargers.
Westview improves to 2-1-1 and plays at Madison on Friday.

Smith’s HR winner
as Skyhawks sweep

Lauren Smith’s two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning pushed UT Martin past Southeast Missouri to complete a sweep of their softball doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at Bettye Giles Field in Martin.
The Skyhawks trailed 1-0 after SEMO scored in the top of third inning.
UTM finished with five hits, including Kayla Wade’s single to lead off the sixth. She then stole second in front of Smith’s home run.
Casey Vincent (4-2) picked up the win, going the distance and allowing seven hits while striking out five.
Shea Cothren pitched a complete game five-hitter in a losing cause.
Becca Williams led off the ninth inning with a double and then scored the game-winning run on Leah Taylor’s base hit to give UTM a 5-4 win in the opener.
Taylor was 3-for-5 with a home run, and Williams was 3-for-4.
Chelsea Jones (12-3) worked out of trouble in the final three innings for the complete-game win.
UTM is slated to open a three-game Ohio Valley Conference series at Murray State on Satur-day.

UT Martin runners
fare well at Rhodes

The UT Martin cross country team performed well in its spring opener over the weekend, taking part in the Rhodes College Open Meet in Memphis.
Colin Johnson finished ninth out of 51 competitors in the 5,000 meter run, coming in at 15:29.43. Benji Sparks (16:16.61), Tallon Scott (16:25.95), Tyler Holmes (16:36.40) and Josiah Roberts (16:48.77) also took part in the event.
Ryan Pett and Jimmy Watkins-Lynch each represented UT Martin in the 10,000 meter run, finishing with times of 34:02.22 and 34:38.89, respectively.
Adam Merook and Vance Pounders each put on strong showings in the one mile run, with Merook finishing in 4:27.92 and Pounders posting a final time of 4:29.91.
Merook (2:00.40) and Pounders (2:02.86) also competed in the 800 meter run.
Amanda Wardlaw (18:52.42) and Hannah Wolters (19:25.93) both competed in the 5,000 meter run. In the one mile run, Laura Wind and Ellie Luze slotted back-to-back finishes with times of 5:54.17 and 5:55.21, respectively.
UT Martin will resume its track schedule March 31 at the Ole Miss Invitational.
