As Child Abuse Awareness month draws near, community members on a local level are gearing up for a night of glitz and glamour with the planning the annual Taste of Weakley and Obion Counties – Carl Perkins Gala. This year’s theme is “Viva Las Kids,” and beginning at 5:30, April 21 promises to be a night featuring casino-style games, decor and plenty of Vegas-style cuisine. Each year, restaurants in Weakley and Obion counties graciously offer an abundant array of what each has to offer inside Volunteer Distributing just outside of Dresden on Highway 22. Guests are also welcome to dress for the theme. Members of the Carl Perkins Center for the Prevention of Child Abuse serving Weakley and Obion Counties, along with its advisory board members, spend the first part of spring gathering door prizes, auction items and sponsorship for the event. This year, an autographed copy of a CD by Barbra Streisand is slated for live auction. Other auction items will include donations from local artisans and businesses. Local entertainer Kenny Presley will be a guest at this year’s event. Local businesses already committed to provide samplings of food include Applebee’s (UC), Brandy’s (Martin), Coca-Cola (UC), Domino’s Pizza (Martin), Sodexo (Martin), Higher Ground Coffee (UC), Pepsi Mid-America, Wendy’s (Martin), Winnie’s Catering (Martin), Opera House (Martin), Myrtle Mae’s Cakes (Troy), La Cabana, Hunt Bros. Pizza (Greenfield) and Looking Glass Coffeehouse and Curiosities (Martin). A $1,000 business sponsorship will sponsor a family served by the local Carl Perkins and includes a reserved table for eight people. A $600 sponsorship will sponsor a child served by the center and includes seating for eight. Sponsorships are also available for $250, which includes reserved seating for eight. Tickets are $25 each and can be purchased by calling the center at 587-0768 or by email at weakley@carlperkinscenter.org. WCP 3.20.12 |
