Engineering work begins to repair bridge in Kentucky
AURORA, Ky. (AP) — The contractor chosen to repair a bridge at the western entrance of Land Between the Lakes has begun engineering and design work on the project.
In a statement released by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, Hall Contracting vice president Tom Roberts says engineers are working out final details for production of steel that will be needed for the massive project.
A 322-foot span of the Eggner’s Ferry Bridge over Kentucky Lake was torn off the night of Jan. 26 when a cargo ship struck it. The 80-year-old bridge provides the western entrance to the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area.
Gov. Steve Beshear declared a regional state of emergency that allows Kentucky to seek federal emergency funds for the repair.
The bridge is scheduled to reopen by May 27. Published in The Messenger 3.21.12
