UTM stays perfect in conference play

The UT Martin softball team won three consecutive games over host Tennessee Tech Saturday and Sunday in Cookeville.
The Skyhawks opened the series with a 6-0 win Saturday afternoon and also won the second game 6-0. The Skyhawks completed the sweep with a 3-1 victory Sunday afternoon.
With the sweep over Tennessee Tech, UT Martin is now 6-0 in the OVC and 16-10 overall. UT Martin returns to action Wednesday when it hosts Southeast Missouri State at Bettye Giles Field.
The two teams will play a doubleheader. The first pitch is set for 3 p.m.
UTM 6, TTU 0
The Skyhawks scattered eight hits and scored three runs in the fifth inning to win the series opener.
Sophomore Kayla Wade was 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBI and two runs scored. She had one of four doubles in the game for UT Martin. Junior Leah Taylor hit her seventh triple of the season and was also 2-for-4 at the plate with a run scored.
Stephanie Nidiffer, Jenny Bain and Katie Reiff also had doubles in the game for the Skyhawks.
Senior Chelsea Jones picked up her 10th win of the season in the circle. She pitched a complete game, scattering seven hits. She struck out three.
UTM 6, TTU 0
UT Martin scored two runs in the first inning and added a run in third inning, one in the fourth inning and two more runs in the fifth inning.
Kayla Wade was 1-for-3 at the plate with a double and two runs scored. Senior Jenny Bain was 1-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI.
Freshman Kenzi Tate had two doubles in the game and was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Freshman Casey Vincent (3-2) earned the win in the circle. She pitched a complete game, giving up four hits and two walks. She struck out a career-best eight batters.
UTM 3, TTU 1
The Skyhawks used three hits and scored early again to complete the sweep. The Skyhawks scored one run in the first inning and two runs in the second inning.
Leah Taylor, freshman and Lauren Smith and Jenny Bain each had a hit in the game. Taylor had a double and scored two of the three runs. She scored the Skyhawks’ first run of the game when she crossed the plate on a wild pitch.
Smith hit and RBI-single to center field. Sophomore Stephanie Nidiffer drew three walks in the game.
Senior pitcher Chelsea Jones pitched her second complete game of the series. She gave up three hits and one run. She struck out four batters.
Jones is now 11-3 on the year with a 2.72 ERA. Published in The WCP 3.20.12
