It was the shot both heard and seen around the world.
Derrick Swift’s 75-foot, three-quarter-court heave that went in at the buzzer for Lake County in the Falcons’ ultimate 79-77 win over Booker T. Washington in the first round of the Class A boys state tournament has caused quite the stir.
Swift’s unlikely feat was chosen the “Play of the Day” on ESPN’s nightly ranking of Top 10 such events on a day when the first round of the NCAA men’s tournament also began.
The shot — posted immediately afterward on the Internet site youtube.com — had drawn only a little more than 100 hits Thursday afternoon, but had 38,000 targets at presstime after going viral.
Local radio broadcaster Russell Barker, who is part of Thunderbolt Broadcasting’s crew that covers Obion Central sports for 104.9, was doing the play-by-play for the TSSAA Network for Thursday’s game and has witnessed his call become an overnight sensation as well.
“It’s been a little overwhelming,” he told The Messenger this morning. “I’d really thought (BTW’s Reginald) Newby would make one of the two free throws with a few seconds left and the game would be over with.
“When he didn’t and Lake County got the rebound, I actually thought Swift had another second to take another dribble before he got the shot off. Then it went in and everyone and everything went crazy. It was just amazing.”
Lake County continues in its quest for back-to-back state titles today with a semifinal matchup vs. Perry County.
