Martin police are warning area residents of a phone scam that appears to be occurring locally.
Residents are being contacted via telephone and advised they have won a sweepstakes. In order to claim the money for the sweepstakes, they are instructed to go to one or more area merchants and purchase a pre-paid credit card and then they are to give the caller the number on the pre-paid credit card.
Police said people should always beware of anyone who calls and claims they have won a sweepstakes or contest and asks them to pay any type of processing or up-front fee.
According to the Martin Police Department, the telephone number of one particular scam is (876) 862-4578.
“Please, do not send any money or give out any of your private information or pre-paid credit card numbers or money grams,” a police spokesman said.
