LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — Zak Poe may not wear his heart on his sleeve, but he does carry a power device for it in a shoulder bag.
The 20-year-old Heb-ron man had an artificial heart implant last month and appeared at a news conference recently at the University of Kentucky.
Poe, who grew up in Maysville, was otherwise healthy before seeking treatment in January for what he thought was an ulcer.
Doctors implanted the SynCardia heart into Poe on Feb. 10. UK medical officials said a second implant was performed , the Lexington Herald-Leader reported (http://bit.ly/wM7NKR ).
The school is one of 29 U.S. centers certified to perform the procedure, which is a bridge while waiting for a donor heart.
The heart can be driven with a portable device called a Freedom Driver that fits into a shoulder bag.
