| A short-handed Union City girls’ team was able to win its tennis season opener. A young Golden Tornado boys’ squad could not duplicate that feat.
UC split with visiting Trinity Christian Academy at the Middle School courts Monday, opening the 2012 season with a 5-2 girls’ win and 7-0 boys’ loss.
The Lady Twisters were missing half of their state tournament doubles tandem as Anna Moore was still nursing an injury suffered Friday night in the girls’ basketball state tournament and did not play.
Moore is expected to return to practice today, according to head coach Elizabeth Miller.
The UC boys, meanwhile, put a young lineup on the courts, Miller’s squad featuring only two veteran players. All other players in the program are first-year participants.
In girls’ play, Jenna Miller, Maddie King and Laura Reed Smith won in the middle of the singles ladder, Miller taking a hard-fought 8-6 win over Mary Knell Sparks at No. 2.
Tara Elam earned a split with Julie Tignor, who was part of the doubles team that defeated Elam and Moore in the state tourney last season.
Tignor took an 8-5 win at the No. 1 singles spot, but then Elam teamed with Miller for an 8-5 win over Tignor and Kennedy Brookfield at the top doubles seed.
