Fortnightly club holds meeting

The Fortnightly Club met recently in the home of Frances Cates with Nancy Gallimore and Maggie Byars, as co-hostesses. Honoring St. Patrick’s Day, the hostesses served a green velvet cake with cream cheese icing, topped with melty mints. The plate was garnished with pistachio nuts and Andes mints.
Club members were served “Wearing of the Green Punch” in a delightful continuation of the theme. In addition, the hostesses treated the members to special take-home favors which were cookies shaped and decorated as shamrocks and leprechaun hats
Carolyn Brown, leader and reporter, introduced the speaker for the afternoon, Frances Cates. Cates is currently a Martin Westview cheerleading sponsor, who helps organize and implement the various activities associated with Westview’s highly competitive cheerleading team.
She talked about April tryouts all the way through the various events of the year which include cheering for football and basketball teams, fundraising, and managing to train at an extremely high level, concluding with the competition at UCA (the Universal Cheerleader Association) in February. This year, in spite of various cheerleader injuries, the team, known for its stunting, exhibited the truest meaning of “teamwork” and, against the odds, placed third. This hard-fought achievement was especially meaningful because the team was actually only two points away from first place.
After the program, president, Mollie Gallien, called the meeting to order. Members recited the Collect. Donna Jones, vice president, read the minutes from the February meeting. They were approved as read. Carolyn James, treasurer, gave her report. Old business dealt with membership; no new business was introduced.
Members present, other than those already mentioned, were Vicky Ayers, Jerrie Conley, Carol Gibson, Martha Lee Lacy, Linda Slack, Nelle Sparks, Barbara Trentham, Sandra Vincent, Linda Wade, Melba Wash and Pat Watkins. Published in The WCP 3.8.12
