MURFREESBORO — Union City won its first-ever TSSAA-sponsored state tournament game today with a 56-33 triumph over Wartburg in the quarterfinals of the Class 1A girls state tournament.
The Lady Tornadoes, now 22-10, advanced to play the winner of the Jackson County-Lorreto game in Friday’s 5:30 semifinals.
Saturday’s single-A champion will be decided in a 6 o’clock contest.
Amber Fair scored 25 points despite battling early foul trouble and Jackie Hudson added 13 and 10 rebounds as UC never trailed in routing Wartburg.
A 17-0 run from 3:30 of the second quarter until midway though the third essentially removed any suspense regarding the outcome. Fair had nine of her points during that span, while Anna Moore made three free throws and drained a 3-pointer just before intermission that gave Union City a 29-16 advantage at the half.
Wartburg made just 7-of-22 (31.8 percent) of its first-half shots and committed 10 turnovers to contribute to its 13-point halftime hole.
