Taylor, Wade key to UTM wins

UT Martin junior Leah Taylor and sophomore Kayla Wade combined for 12 hits, five runs scored, four RBI, three stolen bases, a double and a triple at the Buzz Classic Softball Tournament at Georgia Tech this past weekend.
UT Martin beat UNC-Greensboro 3-2 and Western Kentucky 5-4. The Skyhawks lost to Kennesaw State 2-1 and fell 8-6 in eight innings to nationally-ranked Georgia Tech.
The Skyhawks (10-9) will open the Ohio Valley Conference portion of their schedule Saturday at Bettye Giles Field on campus. The Skyhawks will host SIU Edwardsville in a three-game series.
UT Martin (9-7) built a quick lead when Jenny Bain hit a sacrifice fly in the first inning.
The Skyhawks also tacked on a pair of runs in the third.
Wade knocked in a run with an RBI bunt single and Bain added another sac fly to make it a 3-0 spread early.
Kennesaw St. 2, UTM 1
UTM grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning when Taylor doubled. Kennesaw answered in the sixth inning with back-to-back home runs.
The Skyhawks were limited to three hits in the game. Taylor had two hits, while Kenzi Tate had the other hit.
Ga. Tech 8, UTM 6 (8)
UT Martin senior Bain hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie the game at 4-4 and force extra innings.
Georgia Tech scored four runs in the top of the eighth inning, but the Skyhawks fought back with two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Taylor drove in the first run in the inning with her triple to left field. Wade followed with an RBI single to score Taylor.
UTM 5, Western Ky. 4
The Skyhawks piled up 10 hits and scored two runs in the first inning, one in the second inning and two more in the third inning.
