A drug charge was placed against a Union City man following a traffic stop Friday evening.
Kurtis O’Shea Smith, 19, of 517 Melrose St., Apt. 17, Union City, was arrested at 5:14 p.m. Friday in the 900 block of East Main Street on charges of resisting arrest and possession of a Schedule II controlled substance for resale, according to a Union City Police Department report.
Police had conducted a traffic stop about 5:10 p.m. on a vehicle in which Smith was the front-seat passenger. Knowing there was an active warrant on Smith, a police officer told Smith he was under arrest. As the officer was getting him out of the vehicle, he allegedly attempted to flee by running past the officer and an off-duty sheriff’s deputy who was assisting. Smith was wrestled to the ground and taken into custody, police reported.
While Smith was being assisted to his feet, a plastic bag with three smaller bags of a white powder substance allegedly fell out of his pants. Police said it tested positive for cocaine.
Police also seized $76 in cash from Smith, according to the report.
