Retired Sgt. Vincent E. Newsome, the father of sophomore guard Jasmine Newsome, will represent UT Martin during this week’s OVC Tournament in Nashville as part of the “Hoops for Heroes” program which was coordinated by the members of the OVC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
Hoops for Heroes was inspired by the Wounded Warriors Project (WWP), a non-profit, non-partisan organization whose goal is to help injured service men and women.
The SAAC members were encouraged by the idea of the WWP and created a way to honor military men and women in OVC communities.
During the academic year the SAAC member at each school raised enough money to send at least one service person to the tournament. Newsome and the other honorees will be honored before the men’s semifinals Friday night.
Newsome, who enlisted in the U.S. Army at 19, has received numerous awards during his matriculation including: The Meritorious Service Award; seven Army commendation medals; eight Army achievement medals; four Military Outstanding Volunteer Service medals; and eight good conduct medals.
