Two pedestrians sustained apparently minor injuries Thursday afternoon when they were struck by the bumper of a delivery truck at County Marketplace at 1700 West Reelfoot Ave. in Union City.
Mary Elizabeth Wilson and Betty Joyce Lunsford were taken by ambulance to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Union City following an mishap that occurred about 2:20 p.m., according to a Union City Police Department report.
Police reported the two women, whose ages and addresses were not listed on the report, sustained “minor injuries.”
According to the report, a FedEx delivery truck owned by CRHPD Inc. and driven by Joel L. Dotson, 50, of 16 Amhurst Cove, Jackson, was parked in the fire lane in front of Radio Shack making deliveries. The driver told police he was about to leave but there was another vehicle parked directly in front of him, preventing him from pulling forward.
Dotson told police he started backing up and moved only a foot or so when he heard someone scream. He said he immediately stopped, went to the back of the truck and saw two women on the ground, unsure of what just happened.
Police spoke with the two women after they were transported to the hospital. Ms. Lunsford told police she and Ms. Wilson were about to go into Radio Shack and were walking a few feet behind the FedEx truck. She said she saw the truck start to back up, but was unable to get out of the way in time and was struck by the truck’s rear bumper, according to the report.
