Peay, SEMO reach quarterfinals

NASHVILLE (AP) — Brian Williams sank a 3-pointer with 33 seconds left and then tacked on a fast-break basket to help Jacksonville State beat Austin Peay 75-70 Wednesday night in the Ohio Valley Conference first round.
Williams scored all 18 of his points in the second half, including the trey that gave the seventh-seeded Gamecocks (15-17) a 72-70 lead over the sixth-seeded Governors (12-20).
Darion Rackley added 16 points and Tarvin Gaines 12 for Jacksonville State, which plays No. 4 seed Morehead State in Thursday’s quarterfinals.
Senior TyShwan Edmondson scored 19 of his 22 points, including three 3s, in the first half for Austin Peay, the preseason favorite. Melvin Baker added a double-double with 20 points and 13 rebounds.
The Gamecocks, who have won nine of their last 12, have won only one other OVC tournament game (2006).
The Gamecocks came into the game 1-17 against Austin Peay, which beat Tennessee this season.
SEMO 75, EKU 65
Marland Smith scored 20 points and Tyler Stone had 18 points and 11 rebounds to lead Southeast Missouri to a 75-65 victory over Eastern Kentucky on Wednesday night in the Ohio Valley Conference tournament first round.
Smith went 9 of 13 at the free-throw line and hit 5 of 10 field goals for the fifth-seeded Redhawks (15-15). Southeast Missouri advances into today’s quarterfinal against No. 4 seed Tennessee Tech after ousting eighth-seeded Eastern Kentucky (16-16) for the second straight year.
Leon Powell added 12 points and 14 rebounds and Lucas Nutt dished out 11 assists for the Redhawks.
