Heath Crouse and Tony Robinson outscored Clarksburg on their own.
The Greenfield duo accounted for 49 points as the Yellowjackets hammered Clarksburg 76-43 in the quarterfinals of the Region 7A Tournament Friday night.
The Yellowjackets took it to the Rockets on their own floor, eliminating Clarksburg from the postseason.
Meanwhile, Greenfield moved on to the semifinals, where it faced Humboldt Monday night at Trenton.
The Yellowjackets held a one-point lead with 5:29 to play in the first and then blew the game open with a 15-point run to open up a 24-8 lead. Greenfield outscored Clarksburg 25-4 before the Rockets hit a field goal in a 12:27 span in the first half.
Crouse scored 15 points in the first to go with his game-high 26. Robinson scored 13 points in the half and 23 for the game.
“Those two guys are our leading scorers,” Dresden head coach Peter Angelos said. “It does not surprise me a bit (the way they scored).”
It was not just the offense that was clicking for Greenfield (16-12).
The Yellowjackets held Devon Bailey of the Rockets (22-9) to 16 points by guarding him well and boxing him out under the basket.
Bailey is one of the state’s leading scorers in Class A.
“The thing about Clarksburg is to try to make a hold on Bailey,” Angelos said. “He averages pretty good. He is a terrific player. I feel confident he will play in college somewhere. We did a good job of guarding him. We boxed out and our defensive rebounding helped out.”
The well-rested Yellowjackets, who have not played since Feb. 18, played virtually mistake-free basketball throughout the game. They committed only eight turnovers, three in the first half. Two of the eight turnovers came late in the game when Angelos put his reserves in the game.
“We had a good week of practice, and I felt pretty strong that we were going to come out and play well tonight,” Angelos said.
Clarksburg switched from using a man-to-man defense in the first half to a zone defense in the second half in an attempt to contain Greenfield’s inside game. But it did not stop the Yellowjackets from scoring as they hit four 3-pointers in the half and several 15-foot jump shots. The Rockets had no answer to the potent Yellowjackets scoring attack.
“When we are making threes, we are very hard to guard and we can beat just about anybody,” Angelos said.
Greenfield hit 10 3-point shots on the night, with Robinson accounting for four.
Crouse hit a pair of them, as did Alex Roberts. Hunter Dixon hit one and Tyler Griffin came off the bench late in the game and made the last one for the Yellowjackets.
Although junior guard Hunter Crouse and senior post player Graham Perkins only scored six points between them, they both played a pivotal role for the Yellowjackets as they fed the ball to both Robinson and Heath Crouse.
Hunter Crouse kept the ball moving around on the perimeter and Perkins dished the ball to the inside. Published in The WCP 2.28.12
