The Messenger congratulates Mr. and Mrs. Wes Shumate of Kansas City, Mo., on the birth of a son, Cooper Travis Shumate. He was born Feb. 8, 2012, at 9:01 a.m. at St. Joseph Medical Center in Kansas City. He weighed 7 pounds, 1 ounce, and was 181⁄2 inches in length. He is the brother of Stella Eileen, 3, and Hadley Claire, 1. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Gary Downey of Rome, Ga., and Dr. and Mrs. Travis Shumate of Union City. Great-grandparents are the late E.S. and Melba Workman and Modene Shumate and the late Dale Shumate, all of Portageville, Mo., Doris Hooper and the late Virgil Hooper of Lee’s Summit, Mo., and Jessie Downey and the late Robert Downey of Chillocothe, Mo. The mother is the former Erin Downey of Lee’s Summit.
