|Dresden will get a third crack at the Union City boys this season. |
The Lions — beaten handily by UC twice during the regular season — earned another meeting with the Golden Tornadoes in the first round of the Region 7A Tournament by winning the District 13 championship Monday night with a 78-59 triumph over Clarksburg.
Dresden (22-6) finished a dominant run through the 13A league tournament — the full district schedule, for that matter — by pounding the host Rockets.
With the win, the third this season against Clarksburg as well as the third in the Rockets’ gymnasium, the Lions completed a clean sweep of the district by posting a 3-0 mark in the tournament following a 16-0 run in the regular season.
Dresden now hopes to reverse not only its seasonal trend against Union City (19-10) Friday night, but also avoid a repeat of last year, when the Lions won the District 13 title but lost to the Tornadoes in the first round of regional play.
Joseph Sipes led the Lions vs. Clarksburg with 21 points, while Tyler McPeak had 14, Daniel added 11 and Austin Maxey pitched in 10.
League MVP Devon Bailey led the Rockets and all scorers with 31 points.
Ahead much of the game and holding a double-digit advantage through a good portion of the second half, Dresden put the game away with an 11-2 run in the fourth quarter.
In other results of local interest from Monday night, Humboldt upset seventh-ranked and reigning Class 1A state champion Lake County 76-67 to claim the District 14 boys’ title, while Covington topped Westview 64-53 for the 13AA guys’ championship.

Antonio Brooks lit up the Falcons with six 3-pointers and 28 markers in all.
A seven-point Viking run in the fourth quarter broke a tie score and C.C. Moody scored 14 for Humboldt and Chris McLilly also scored 14 for the winners (19-10), who’ll now host Bruceton in the first round of Region 7A Tournament Friday.
Rafael Tyler — named the league’s regular season MVP — topped Lake County with 18 points. Devon Jones scored 15 and Derrick Swift added 14 for the Falcons (19-8).
LC will host Huntingdon in a regional quarterfinal Friday.
Covington 64, Westview 53
Top-seed Covington knocked off No. 9-ranked Westview with a sticky defense and dominant boardwork.
Westview (24-6) had its eight-game winning streak snapped and was denied a second straight league championship after scoring a season-low 17 points in the first half while making just five field goals.
Westview, which had split a pair of regular season games with their fellow Chargers, led only briefly in the initial minutes of the third contest and posted a season-low point total (17) in the first half while making just five field goals.
Covington built a lead as big as 17 points in the third period before Martin made the final tally respectable — but never getting closer than nine.
Westview will now host the winner of tonight’s District 14 consolation game — pitting Jackson South Side against McNairy County — in a regional quarterfinal game Saturday.
Covington (24-5), the tourney’s top seed after winning the regular season league championship and winners of seven straight since last losing to Westview on Jan. 27, will play the loser of tonight’s third-place game.
Martin trailed 15-6 after one, 27-17 at the half and by as much as 39-23 halfway through the third quarter.
Jazelle Baker had 19 points, Antonio Hogard 15 and Chris Evans 13 to pace the Weakley Countians in the scoring department. Published in The Messenger 2.21.12
