The Messenger, February 15, 2012
An Obion County woman has reported a scam involving receiving a notice by mail claiming she was beneficiary of an unclaimed settlement.
Patricia Pinkston of Hornbeak told The Messenger she received a check in the mail Monday and a letter claiming a network system showed her as the beneficiary of the unclaimed settlement for $100,000. The letter contained a check for $2,352.51 and advised her to keep the activity confidential until it was processed.
She said the letter was supposedly from a bank in Syracuse, N.Y., but when she called the company listed in the letter, they did not know anything about the claim.
Ms. Pinkston knew it was a scam, but she wants other local residents to use caution and not become victims.
Police always urge local residents to use caution and never to give out personal account information. Anyone who thinks they have been the victim of a scam is asked to contact their local law enforcement.
