January was an exciting month and we started the year off with some new groups coming to visit us. Kenny Presley came the first of the month and entertained the residents with his beautiful voice. Wilma Yost and Maidelle Brundige really enjoyed themselves. Then, we had the pleasure of having Vivian Hubbard’s niece and her family come and do a puppet show. The residents really had a ball watching them perform. Several of the residents said they had not seen a puppet show since they were young children.
Bingo winners were Evelyn Nooner, Ruby Hall, James Granner, Martha Smith, Hazel Green, Irene Sadler, Wyona Brown, Alberta Laws, Charles Walker, and Brooksie Bessent. Yahtzee winners were Donald Gant and Sandra Winston.
We had a very special birthday this month, too. Ms. Mary Burks turned 100 on Jan. 6.
We had a special party for her in the dining room where we served a big cake with blue roses , her favorite color and flowers. All residents and staff attended and sang to her.
Other birthdays last month were: Mary Jones, Paulette Melton, Dorothy Gunn, Donald Gant, Wyonna Brown, Maria Moran, Juanita Brown, and Mary Maddox. We had a cake and drinks in honor of them.
Some of our special events last month included the monthly auction. Doris Maassen really enjoys herself. She loves to bid on every item. Also, we had wine and cheese last month. Stanly Alford really enjoys tasting the different wines provided.
In the Lighthouse Community, we celebrated Friday the 13th with a “Friday the 13th” tea party. The residents seemed to enjoy the festivities. Cookies of choice and tea were served at the social. We also held a discussion about Friday the 13th and myths and superstitions about the day.
We also had music club. In music club, we get our instruments and make music together. We have cymbals, tambourines, harmonicas, maracas, and a keyboard. One song we like to make music to, is “When the Saints Go Marching In.” They really enjoy the song, and a lot of the residents remember singing this when they were younger.
We also had our birthday party for the month. Ms. Annie Merrittt and Mr. Wayne Reynolds celebrated their birthdays. We wished them both a happy birthday and had a party for them. Published in The WCP 2.7.12
