Give me an “O” — as in Obion Central.
Obion County Central High School’s cheerleaders will be competing this weekend in the 2012 National High School Cheerleading Championships at Disney World in Orlando, Fla.
The award-winning 38-member squad will take the floor to compete at 4:59 p.m. (EST) Saturday as a Super Varsity Division II semi-finalist, according to a schedule provided to The Messenger.
They will check in and have a team photo made at 4:14 p.m. at Disney’s Hollywood Studios’ Indiana Jones Theater and are scheduled to begin an eight-minute warm-up at 4:29 prior to the scheduled competition time 30 minutes later.
The Super Varsity Division II finalists will be announced and a drawing for random order of competition held from 6-6:15 p.m. Saturday. Those teams which advance will compete in the finals Sunday morning at the ESPN Wide World of Sports® HP Field House.
The OCCHS squad, coached by David Byars and Ashleigh Wilds, has enjoyed a spectacular season which has included performing in the TSSAA State Cheer and Dance Championship in Murfreesboro and — for the first time in school history — being crowned state champions in the Super Varsity Division to earn the bid to the national competition in Orlando.
In addition, the squad earned a third-place finish in the Universal Cheerleaders Association competition in DeSoto, Miss.
The Obion County School Board recognized the outstanding cheer squad with a special resolution last month.
“The success of this year’s team reflects their drive for success, motivation and resilience of these young student-athletes and the training they received from their staff and coaches,” according to the resolution.
