Downtown is lifeblood of community

As a TN Downtowns Community, the City of Martin has proven its willingness to be attractive to visitors, as well as its residents. Weakley County Chamber of Commerce executive director Barbara Virgin stressed the importance of Martin as a TN Downtowns Community during a  recent Historic Martin meeting. Virgin said statistically 30 percent of a community’s jobs are generated through its downtown, while 40 percent of its tax base is sourced from a vibrant downtown.
With Martin’s designation as a TN Downtowns Community, the entire county benefits through extra credits for its Three-Star program offered by the governor.
“Revitalization used to be just clean up of an area. Now it is so much more. A downtown group is the city’s working cheerleaders, offering stability and a point of focus,” Virgin said. She told the group to continue its interest in community enhancement and keep up the hard work.
