Hornbeak league
has sign-up dates

Registration for the Hornbeak Baseball League is scheduled for noon-6 p.m. both Saturday and Feb. 25 at the Hornbeak City Hall.
The sign-up fee is $20 per child and $15 for each additional sibling. Payment is due at registration, and parents should also bring their health ID card and their child’s birth certificate.

Signups for the Rives Summer Baseball Leagues will be held Saturday from 10 a.m. until noon at the Rives City Hall.
Youths interested in playing T-ball, coach-pitch, minor league and/or little league this year should register.
All first-time players will need to bring a birth certificate to the signup.

Pair of UT players
invited to combine

KNOXVILLE (AP) — The NFL has invited Tennessee seniors Malik Jackson and Tauren Poole to participate in the NFL scouting combine.
Jackson, a defensive lineman from Northridge, Calif., led the Volunteers in 2011 with 11 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks and 10 quarterback hurries. He also recorded 56 tackles, two pass breakups and a forced fumble.
Poole, a running back from Toccoa, Ga., ran for 1,883 yards and 16 touchdowns in 49 career games. In 2011, he gained 693 yards rushing and caught 21 passes for 164 yards.
The combine is scheduled for Feb. 22-28 in Indianapolis.

Cards sign Cora
to ‘Minor’ deal

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Light-hitting infielder Alex Cora has agreed to a minor league contract with the St. Louis Cardinals and would get an $800,000 deal if added to the 40-man roster.
The 36-year-old played all four infield positions last season for the Washington Nationals while appearing in 91 games and making 16 starts at third base.
