UTM spring enrollment reaches almost 7,400
A total of 7,395 students enrolled for spring semester classes at the University of Tennessee at Martin, the third highest spring enrollment on record for the school.
The spring 2012 total compares to 7,824 students enrolled for spring semester 2011.
The decrease stemmed primarily from changes involving the part-time enrollment of some 400 fewer high school students through the university’s dual enrollment program. The current spring numbers reflect an increase of one percent in the number of returning undergraduate students and a 25 percent increase in first-time graduate students.
The UT Martin Office of Institutional Research compiles enrollment information for the university.
“We are encouraged by our enrollment increases in first-time graduate students and returning undergraduate students,” said Dr. Tom Rakes, UT Martin chancellor. “The upturn in first-time graduate students has been influenced by changes in the state’s eligibility standards that allow teachers to pursue a master’s in educational leadership earlier in their professional careers with our online master’s degree program.”
He added, “Equally significant is the growth in returning undergraduate students, reflecting a campus commitment to excel in the initiatives required by the Complete College Tennessee Act. Campus enrollment trends show growth among our upper-division students, leading to more UT Martin students earning their degrees.”
The act emphasizes completion rates over enrollment in determining public college funding. UT Martin has the third highest graduation rate among Tennessee public universities.
Preliminary fall 2012 applications to UT Martin forecast a potential record freshman class enrollment. Summer Orientation and Registration (SOAR) is scheduled April 21, June 7-8, June 28-29 and July 16-17. Transfer orientation and registration will take place June 15 and July 13.
