It was an idea three years in the making, but the county’s economic leaders are seeing it come to fruition.
The Weakley County Economic Development Board recently launched a new website promoting the county as a retirement destination.
Board chairman Nick Dunagan said the idea was created three to four years ago when WCEDB received a TVA grant to conduct a survey focusing on the county’s strengths.
Dunagan said with a limited number of manufacturing jobs in the region to serve as a marketing focus, the idea of marketing the county to retirees and prospective retirees seemed a good fit for a county, which is home to a large university.
“We wanted to focus on our low crime rate, the low cost of living index in Weakley County and our close proximity to larger cities such as Nashville and Memphis,” Dunagan said. The board chairman also touted the recreational amenities available across the county and the county’s close proximity to Reelfoot Lake.
The website, www.retiretenn.com, is themed “Relax, Play, Live in Weakley County.” It features quotes from residents of Weakley County as well as photos of local people and attractions.
There is a “Contact Us” section to provide more information and personal contact to anyone interested in re-locating to Weakley County. Dunagan and WCEDB CEO Ronnie Price said there are plans to add information and enhancements to the work in progress. Both encourage d cities throughout the county, the Weakley County Chamber of Commerce, UT Martin and Weakley County to have a link to the website. Plans are under way to send out mailers to people who request information through www.retiretenn.com. The website was developed by Younger and Associates of Jackson.
