Sophomore guards Jasmine Newsome and Heather Butler combined for 64 points and 14 assists to lead UT Martin to a 105-90 victory over visiting Tennessee State Monday night in the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center.
Butler scored 42 points and set a new UT Martin record for most points scored in a single game.
The old record (40 points) was set in 1989 by Mary Kate Long.
Newsome had 22 points, 18 in the second half.
TSU was led by Chelsea Hudson with 38 points and 17 rebounds.
Tennessee State led 45-40 at the half and out-rebounded UT Martin 27-14. Tennessee State won the battle of the boards 50-35, but UT Martin was able to gain an advantage in the second half.
“I thought we crashed the boards better in the second half,” Butler said. “We played as a team. When you are playing well, the shots start falling and that’s what happened to us.”
Newsome capped off an old fashioned 3-point play with 15:09 to play in the second half and Butler followed with a 3-pointer to give UT Martin a 57-52 advantage. The Skyhawks never relinquished the lead and stretched it to 20 points, 98-78, when Butler knocked down a 3-pointer with 4:09 to play.
“I think Butler saw what they were doing and took advantage of it,” UTM head coach Kevin McMillan said of TSU’s double-team on Newsome, who scored 37 points in the first meeting.
