Theft charge levied

A homeless man was arrested on a theft charge Sunday after a stolen vehicle was discovered on a store parking lot in Union City.
Gary Patrick Shaffer, 47, whose address was listed as homeless, was arrested on a charge of theft of property over $1,000 at 3:32 p.m. at the Lowe’s parking lot at 800 West Reelfoot Ave., according to a Union City Police Department report.
Police were dispatched to the Lowe’s parking lot shortly after 3 p.m. in reference to a possible stolen vehicle. An officer located the white 1988 Ford Ranger and found a man identified as Shaffer sitting on the driver’s side.
He was taken into custody for possession of the truck, which was verified as stolen out of Memphis, police reported.
