|Jeremy Washington, Troy King and Mike Liabo scored double-digit points for UT Martin, but it wasn’t enough to offset host Austin Peay and John Fraley Saturday night in the Dunn Center as the Govs claimed a 92-73 Ohio Valley Conference victory over the Skyhawks. |
Washington scored 10 points, while King came off the bench to score 15 points and Liabo knocked down 18 points.
King scored 13 of his 15 points in the first half as he made 5-of-7 field goals and three 3-pointers.
The Skyhawks led twice in the first half and the score was tied once at 8-8. “Troy got us started in the first half and we competed and played hard,” UT Martin head coach Jason James said.
Austin Peay led 40-37 at the half. Fraley scored 10-of-his game high 23 points in the first half. He finished the game with 13 rebounds to post a double-double for the Govs.
In the second half the Govs opened a 10-point lead when Fraley made a free throw with 15:41 to play. The Skyhawks fought back and pulled to within a point, 67-66, when Liabo drilled a 3-pointer.
This time Austin Peay stretched its lead again and never looked back in the game as it went on a 22-3 run in the final 5:42 of the game.
“This was a much better game than the score,” James said. “We competed tonight.”
The Skyhawks shot 55 percent from the field in the first half and made four-of-six 3-pointers (67 percent).
“We were able to play against the game and not the score,” James said.
Austin Peay had four played score in double figures, TyShwa Edmondson had 22 points. Josh Terry added 16 points and Melvin Baker turned in 12 points.
UT Martin is 3-20 on the year and 0-10 in the OVC. Published in The Messenger 1.30.12
