The Messenger, January 20, 2012
Local residents are being warned about a new phone scam apparently operating through Obion County.
Kelly Embry of Troy contacted The Messenger Thursday afternoon and said her mother, June Ruble of Hornbeak, has been contacted by telephone more than 22 times during the past two days by a man claiming to be a John Rico of Franklin. He reportedly told Ms. Ruble she had been selected as the winner of a brand new Mercedes as well as a $3.5 million cash prize. Ms. Embry said her mother was told in order to claim her prizes she needed to purchase a prepaid Visa card in the amount of the taxes on the $3.5 million cash award and then mail the card to Franklin.
Ms. Embry said her mother was not taken in by the offer and she has been advised to contact her local law enforcement agency concerning the calls.
Anyone who is approached with a similar offer is encouraged to contact their local law enforcement agency.
