|Under legislation passed by the state General Assembly Friday, the 24th Senatorial District, the 76th District and the 8th Congressional saw changes in lines. |
State Sen. Roy Herron said regardless of the changes, he will continue to work hard for current and future members of the 24th Senatorial District.
“Citizens in all these counties need jobs and schools and representation for their views and values,” Herron said.
The new legislation adjusted the 24th District from the counties of Benton, Decatur, Henry, Henderson, Lake, Obion, Perry, Stewart and Weakley to Benton, Henry, Obion, Weakley and the addition of Gibson and Carroll counties.
Herron followed suit with many Democrats opposing the bill and said he cast a “nay” vote because of the “lack of openness and excessive partisanship.”
The senator said maps of the new districts were released to the public late the week prior with little detail and little opportunity for public input.
The 76th District represented by Rep. Andy Holt of Palmersville will include portions of Obion County.
All three maps were released the week of Jan. 3. The legislative session convened Jan. 10.
