|Obion Central reached the 20-win mark for the 10th straight season Tuesday night with a 56-38 triumph over homestanding Haywood. |
It marked the 35th time in 51 seasons that the Lady Rebels had accomplished such a feat and improved the state’s No. 2-ranked team’s record to 20-1 this season.
The Rebel boys were not as fortunate, dropping a 91-76 decision to the Tomcats.
A 19-0 explosion from late in the first period until midway in the second sent the Obion Central girls on their way to another landmark Tuesday.
It was 33-19 at halftime before the Rebel girls then outscored their opposition in both the third and fourth quarters as well.
Brandi Goodman continued her solid play in the post with a double-double (20 points, 15 rebounds), while Macy Wright tallied 18 points.
The Central victory — their 41st straight in District 13AA play — also broke Haywood’s seven-game winning streak.
The Lady Tomcats are now 9-7 overall and 5-6 in the district.
OC is 11-0 and in first place in the league standings heading into a showdown with No. 5-ranked Dyersburg Friday night at Troy.
In the boys’ game Tuesday, Obion Central played relatively well, but not well enough to keep up with hot-shooting Haywood (11-6, 7-4), which shot 53 percent and also made 9-of-17 from 3-point range.
The Rebels (7-11, 3-8) hit 50 percent of their shots as well and six times from beyond the arc.
A 30-point Tomcat second quarter put OC in a big hole, however, and though they got as close as eight in the fourth period, the county locals could never get over the hump.
Shyheim Slayton had 20 points and six assists for Central, while Bryan Morris finished with 13 points despite battling foul trouble much of the night.
Coleman Dunn chipped in with 10 points to give the Rebs three players in double digits. Published in The Messenger 1.18.12
