Ex-Goodyear workers eligible for assistance at local career center
Former workers at Union City’s Goodyear plant have until March 30 to apply for career assistance through a federal grant being administered through the local Tennessee Career Center.
The local Tennessee Career Center has an-nounced all eligible workers affected by the Goodyear closure should contact the center before March 30 in order to register for services under the National Emergency Grant.
In November 2011, a $3,448,259 National Emergency Grant was awarded to the state Department of Labor and Workforce Development to serve about 850 of the 1,983 total workers affected by the closure of the local Goodyear plant.
Grant funds are being used to assist the dislocated workers and eligible family members with reemployment services and skills training.
“The March 30th deadline is the last day that affected workers, spouses and dependents, 18 years or older and living in the same household, can register for services through the National Emergency Grant.  While we have had over 800 people enrolled, there are still opportunities available for others seeking career center services.  It is crucial that anyone interested in taking advantage of grant funds register with the career center prior to March 30, 2012,” Tennessee Career Center director Connie Stewart stated in a news release.
Services offered through the Tennessee Career Center for former Goodyear workers include reemployment workshops covering resume writing, interviewing skills and completing an application. The center also offers career exploration assessments, tuition assistance, transportation stipends and on-the-job training opportunities.
The Goodyear Career Center is located at 204 South Second St. in Union City.
The office is open from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.
