Twisters feel right at ‘home’ with twin wins
Union City moved across the street and finished its home schedule in style.
Playing their final home games of the 2011-12 middle school basketball season at the high school gymnasium, the junior Tornadoes swept Humboldt in convincing fashion with a 44-25 girls’ win and 47-29 boys’ verdict.
UC’s final regular season games will be Thursday at Lake County.
Other local junior high action saw county entries Hillcrest and Lake Road split their respective doubleheaders.
The Cougars traveled north of the state line and divided a pair with Fulton City, taking a 46-40 girls’ win and suffering 39-36 double-overtime loss in the boys’ game.
LR posted a 29-17 girls’ win and took a 61-34 boys’ loss in a pair of home games against Martin.
Twisters top Vikes
Chynia Hyde scored 18 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the Lady Twisters, while Joe Wiggins and Willaevion Burton both scored in double figures for the UC boys.
Hyde hit eight of UC’s 17 2-point field goals on the night, scoring 16 of her 18 points after the first period.
Union City grabbed a 14-6 lead after one and then limited the Lady Vikings to a single free throw in the second period in pulling out to a 23-7 halftime advantage.
UC’s lead was 38-19 after three periods.
Tykesha Vaughn had nine points and nine rebounds along with four steals, London Green and Chante Deberry both scored seven points, and Caroline Chism grabbed nine boards for Union City.
Wiggins pumped in 20 points and Burton added 11 as Union City’s boys took control early, similar to the girls’ early game.
The Golden Tornadoes held a 16-7 lead after one period and 26-13 at the half.
UC was up 35-21 after three quarters.
LR girls win, boys fall
The Lady Generals ran their record to 13-1 in their final tune-up before postseason play, overcoming a slim halftime deficit.
Lake Road held a 4-3 advantage after one period but then trailed 12-10 at the half. LR then limited the Lady Panthers to just two points in the third frame in taking an 18-14 lead.
Hannah Cavness had 14 points, and Bryleigh Jennings scored eight for the Lady Generals.
Brett Jackson had 12 points and five rebounds, and Seth Clouse added six points and four boards for the Lake Road boys.
The Generals (7-6) boys trailed 24-1 after one period and 48-1 at the half.
Hillcrest splits
Both Cougar teams trailed after the first period and then led going into the fourth, the Hillcrest girls coming out with the win.
The Lady Cougars trailed 10-8 after the first period but rallied for a 25-14 halftime advantage and 36-31 lead at the end of three quarters.
Courtney Heuck scored 22 points, and McClain Bell added 12 points for Hillcrest, which improved to 4-10.
Hillcrest’s boys overcame a slim first-period deficit as well, tying the game at 14-all at the half and ahead 23-16 after three quarters following an 8-6 deficit at the end of the opening frame.
Numerous missed shots from close range, according to head coach Travis Johnson, thwarted his team’s bid in the fourth period and both overtimes. The game was tied 28-all at the end of regulation and 32-32 at the end of the first extra period.
Cain Aaron scored 12 points and grabbed 14 rebounds, while Jonathan Dobson added seven points for the Cougars (4-10).
