Skyhawks, SEMO to tip off new year Posted: Friday, January 6, 2012 12:00 pm The UT Martin men’s basketball team begins the 2012 calendar year tonight when it hosts the Southeast Missouri Redhawks. Tip-off from the Elam Center will be 7 p.m. The Skyhawks (3-13, 0-3 Ohio Valley Conference) have won four straight home games over Southeast Missouri, having not lost to the Redhawks in the Elam Center since a 73-69 setback on Feb. 3, 2007. Overall, UTM sports a 21-10 home record against Southeast Missouri and a 14-5 mark against the Redhawks since joining the OVC in 1992. UT Martin is coming off an 85-62 loss to Tennessee Tech last Saturday. In that game, the Skyhawks shot a season-high 91.7 percent from the free throw line (22-for-24) and received a game-high 26 points from Myles Taylor. SEMO (7-7, 2-0 OVC) has won three straight, including home victories over Morehead State (67-51) and Jacksonville State (74-56) to begin league play. The Redhawks are bolstered by one of the league’s best frontcourts in Tyler Stone and Leon Powell. Stone ranks sixth in the OVC in scoring (15.0 ppg) and third in rebounding (7.5 per game), while Powell leads the league in field goal percentage (.729) and is seventh in rebounding (6.5 per game). OVC’s best, again Jasmine Newsome, one of the guards on the UT Martin women’s basketball team, was named the adidas Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week Monday afternoon. Newsome, a 5-7 sophomore, and fellow sophomore Heather Butler combined for 60 percent of UT Martin’s points against Tennessee Tech and 63 percent of the team’s points versus Tennessee State. Newsome led the team in assists with 16 and was second in free throw shooting (.821) for the week. Newsome scored 24 points against Tech and followed that up with a game-high 37 points against Tennessee State. She also tallied 11 points at No. 13 Louisville. Newsome also was named the adidas OVC Player of the Week on Nov. 22 and Nov. 29. Meanwhile, Murray State sophomore Erica Burgess has earned her third-straight and fifth overall adidas OVC Newcomer of the Week honor.
