One of the state’s best football teams filled in many spots on its all-district team.
Dresden put eight players on the All-District 13A squad following a season that saw the Lions post a school-record 12 wins and advance to the state championship game for the first time in school history.
The Lions lost to Friendship Christian in the Class 2A state title game in December.
While Dresden had eight players, Gleason followed a season where it made some history of its own with four players tabbed as all-district quality.
The Bulldogs advanced to the 1A state playoffs, winning a home playoff game for the first time in school history.
Gatlin Hatchel led the way for Dresden as the senior quarterback who threw for over 1,600 yards and rushed for more than 1,400 more was tabbed as the league’s offensive Most Valuable Player.
He was joined on the offensive side of the ball by lineman Todd Morgan, wide receiver Colin Kanehl and running back Devin Raymer.
The defensive side had four Lions as well, including three who posted more than 100 tackles.
Lineman D.J. Ellis, linebackers Tyler McPeak and Eric VanDyke — all posting 100-plus stops — and defensive back Colter Swafford were lauded for their play on defense.
Three of Gleason’s four picks came on the defensive side.
Lineman Gabe Lawrence, linebacker Blake Taylor and defensive back Austin Perry were honored, as was offensive lineman Cole Verdell.
The Bull-dogs won four of their final six games, including a 19-12 win over South Fulton in the opening round of the playoffs.
A pair of siblings from Huntingdon were the other MVPs as Jacob Warbritton was tabbed the Most Valuable Player on defense and Tyler Warbritton was selected the All-District MVP.
Huntingdon led the league with 10 all-district picks, including linemen Colin Pruett, Aaron Gurley and Brandon Huss, and running back Torey Watson on offense, lineman Donnell Burden and linebackers KC Miller and Logan Diebold on defense and kicker Ary Albuquerque.
Other all-district players included:
McKenzie — WR Robert Taylor, LB Collin Vinson, P Zeke Hicks.
Bruceton — OL Colton Johnson, WR Elijah Phillips, DL Landen Pearson, DB Haden Williams.
West Carroll — OL Tyler Madison, RB Carson Suite, RB Jacob Wynn, QB Jamal Glenn, DB Chris Bell. Published in The WCP 1.5.12
