Records fall as Skyhawk women outscore TSU
The UT Martin women scored 71 points in the second half and overcame a 9-point halftime deficit to beat host Tennessee State 114-105 Monday night at the Gentry Center.
UT Martin set a new school record for most points scored in a game (114), and the two teams combined for 219 points and set a new Ohio Valley Conference record for most points scored in a game.
The Skyhawks improve to 8-6 overall and 2-0 in the OVC. Tennessee State falls to 5-10 on the year and 1-1 in the league standings. The two consecutive OVC wins mark the first time since 2002-03 that the Skyhawks have opened the league 2-0.
“If you would have told me we were going to give up 105 points, I wouldn’t have thought much about it,” UT Martin head coach Kevin McMillan said. “I didn’t think our effort was very good in the first half.”
The Skyhawks first-half effort was solid, but Tennessee State shot 47 percent from the field and 61 percent from behind the arc. Jasmin Shuler scored 15-of-20 points in the first half and Tennessee State led 52-43 at the break.
UT Martin responded in the first minute of the second half with a 6-0 run, but it wasn’t enough. The score was tied once in the half and the lead changed three times. Sophomore Aubrey Reedy knocked down a 3-pointer to give the Skyhawks a 67-66 lead with 14:24 to play. Reedy scored eight consecutive points to help the Skyhawks take the lead.
The Skyhawks stretched their lead to eight points, 91-82 with six minutes to play when Jasmine Newsome made a layup.
Heather Butler scored seven consecutive points in the run. Newsome finished the game with 37 points, while Butler added 35 points.
Together Newsome and Butler combined for 72 points, which was 63 percent of the Skyhawks’ tally. Senior Taylor Hall matched her career-high with 15 points, while sophomore Perica Glenn tossed in 10 points.
Tennessee State had six players in double digits. Tayla Foster finished the game with a double-double, 10 points and 11 rebounds.
The Skyhawks return to action Saturday when they host SIU Edwardsville in the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m.
Before that, the UT Martin men play host to Southeast Missouri State, Thursday night at 7.
The Skyhawks (3-13, 0-3) will also be part of an OVC doubleheader on Saturday, playing after the women’s game against SIU-E at 7 p.m. Published in The Messenger 1.3.12
