McKenzie no trouble for Dresden; Westview, Gleason drop twinbills

Dresden had no trouble with McKenzie in girls’ basketball action Tuesday night.
The other county teams had no such luck.
The Lady Lions rolled to a 59-27 win in prep basketball play.
Meanwhile, both West-view and Gleason were on the wrong end of the girls’ and boys’ outcomes.
Westview suffered a 49-45 girls’ setback and a 52-47 boys’ defeat in a District 13AA doubleheader at Covington, while Gleason fell 48-45 in overtime in the girls’ game and 45-30 in boy’s action against Big Sandy.
Dresden 59, McKenzie 27
The Lady Lions put the game away early, grabbing a 22-7 lead after one quarter and a 37-15 advantage at the half.
Dresden then put up 20 points in the third period for a 57-21 lead.
Jessica Jones led three Dresden players in double figures, hitting three 3-pointers to finish with a game-high 15 points.
Kristen Childress and Amy McAlpin each added 13 points for the Lady Lions (6-3).
Kailey Martin topped the Lady Rebels with 10 points, knocking down a pair of 3-pointers in the contest.
Covington 49, WV 45
The Purple and Gold Chargers used an 18-7 run in the fourth quarter to overtake Westview for the win.
Westview grabbed the early momentum with a 15-7 lead after one quarter and held a 26-22 advantage at the half. Westview’s lead was 38-31 at the end of three periods.
Teddy Vincent topped all players with 22 points, hitting a pair of 3-pointers, and Jasmine Howard added 10 points for Westview.
Kamesha VanPelt scored 15 points, and Precious Dyson added 13 for Cov-ington.
Dyson hit two 3-pointers.
Big Sandy 48, Gleason 45
The Red Devilettes rallied from a 31-23 deficit at the end of three quarters and then outscored Gleason 9-6 in overtime for the win.
Big Sandy doubled Gleason’s scoring output in the fourth quarter, 16-8, to force the extra period.
Briana Jones had 17 points, and Jaclyn Mont-gomery hit four 3-pointers and finished with 13 points for the Lady Bulldogs.
Luz Mena had 24 points, and Marissa Fletcher scored 12 points for Big Sandy.
Covington 52, WV 47
Covington’s better first half was just enough to hold off Westview, which won the second half.
The home team held a 27-16 advantage at the intermission and then held on as the visitors took a 31-25 scoring advantage over the final 16 minutes.
Javier Gordon scored 14 points, and Antonio Hogard added 11 for Westview.
Shelton Lyons scored 14 points, and both Jawan Austin and Jaylon Dyson had 11 points for Covington.
Big Sandy 45, Gleason 30
The Red Devils outscored Gleason in every quarter to pull away for the win.
Big Sandy was ahead 9-4 after one quarter, 19-13 at the end of the fiirst half and 31-20 by the end of the third period.
Logan Pierpoint was the only player in double figures, scoring 15 for the Devils. Published in The WCP 12.15.11
