Greenfield did not have much luck keeping up with its District 14A foe, Lake County, Friday night with both the girls and boys taking a loss.
The Lady Yellowjackets dropped their first district game of the season against the Lady Falcons, losing by the score of 53-39. The Lady Falcons opened up a nine-point lead midway through the final period after the Greenfield closed the gap to within four points to start the period.
In the boys’ game, Greenfield put up a good fight against the defending Class A state champs, but Lake County was able to stay ahead of Greenfield throughout the game and walked away with a 73-61 victory.
Both Greenfield teams are at Bradford tonight in another district game while is playing at South Fulton in another district matchup tonight.

Lake County used Shamon Pearson’s free throw shooting down the stretch in the final period to hand the Lady ’Jackets their first defeat in district play Friday night. Pearson went six-for-six from the line the Lady Falcons made all 10 of their free throw attempts in the fourth period.
Greenfield was down 32-25 at the start of the final frame when Kalee Kesterson scored from under the rim followed by an Abby McDaniel basket to cut the lead to four. After a Lady Falcon basket, Haley Rawls nailed a 3-pointer to make the score 34-31. Lake County then scored six straight to widen the gap to 38-31.
The Lady Falcons scored 10 of their final 14 points from the charity stripe, while Greenfield managed only eight points during that stretch with Kesterson hitting a 3-pointer with 2:35 to go to make it a 40-34 game. That was as close as G’field could get to Lake County the rest of the way.
Greenfield, which is normally a good 3-point shooting team, only made three shots and did not get many good looks at most of their 3-point attempts. The Lady ’Jackets also went just 4-of-7 from the free throw line as Lake County played disciplined ball throughout the game and only committed 13 fouls.
Shamellia McMullen led Greenfield with 13 points followed by Kesterson with 12. Lake County’s T.T. Flowers led all scorers with 19.
The Lady Yellowjackets are now 7-2 (2-1) for the season. Lake County improves to 6-1 (3-0) after beating Jackson South Side 60-36 on Saturday.

Greenfield was down 61-43 to begin the fourth period but outscored the Falcons 18-12 in an attempt to stay with Lake County.
Lake County’s overly-aggressive defense forced several turnovers in the game, but also sent the Yellowjackets to the line for 29 free throw attempts in the game with the Jackets hitting 21 of them. Lake County attempted 21 shots from the line themselves and connected on 11 of them. Greenfield also missed some easy shots late in the game that could have cut into the lead even more.
