NASHVILLE — A trio of University of Tennessee at Martin men’s basketball players cracked double-figures against Lipscomb, but costly turnovers came back to haunt the Skyhawks in a 70-55 loss Tuesday night at Allen Arena.
Jeremy Washington tallied game-highs of 12 points and seven rebounds to lead the Skyhawks (2-8), while Myles Taylor (11 points) and Mike Liabo (10) reached double-figures. Martez Harris tied a career-best with nine points and Khristian Taylor amassed a new career-high with seven points for UT Martin, which outrebounded Lipscomb 39-31 but committed 22 turnovers.
Jordan Burgason and Malcolm Smith each scored 11 points for Lipscomb (6-4), while Deonte Alexander and Marvin Williams each added 10 points for the Bisons.
The Skyhawks held an early lead, thanks to Taylor. The freshman scored the first bucket of the game at the 18:46 mark and accounted for four of the team’s first seven points. Lipscomb then pieced together a 9-2 run to lead by seven points, but UT Martin answered back by scoring eight unanswered points over a span of 2:04 to take a 17-16 advantage.
After the Bisons scored on their next possession, UT Martin grabbed the lead right back with a drive to the hoop by Khristian Taylor at the 7:43 mark.
However, the Bisons then went on a 12-0 run, pushing their lead out to 30-19 with just under four minutes to play in the first half. A layup by Harris at the 3:22 mark ended the cold stretch for the Skyhawks, but Lipscomb answered with its fifth 3-pointer of the evening just seven seconds later, extending its lead to 12.
The margin would remain at 12 at halftime as Lipscomb led 35-23. Taylor and Harris led all scorers with seven points apiece at the break.
Washington got the Skyhawks going in the second half, scoring four straight points in the first minute of play to get UT Martin within eight points at 35-27. Lipscomb was able to go back on top by 12 before another Washington bucket made the score 41-31 with 16:37 to play.
The Bisons led by 14 points midway through the second half, but the Skyhawks scored four straight points to get back within 10. Liabo sank a turnaround jumper in the lane and on UT Martin’s next possession, Taylor canned a jumper with his foot on the three-point line to slice Lipscomb’s lead to 54-44 with just under nine minutes to go.
Just as it appeared the momentum would flip in the Skyhawks’ direction, Lipscomb posted another run — this time scoring eight straight points to open up a 62-44 lead with 4:34 left to play. UT Martin could not get any closer than 15 points the rest of the way.
The Skyhawks return to action on Saturday with a trip to Murfreesboro to take on Middle Tennessee State at 5 p.m. Published in The WCP 12.8.11
